Constructing any building is a comprehensive process that can takes months to years to complete. One of the biggest concerns for construction firms is the effective storage of the large quantity of construction materials.

Effective storage prevents damage and also paves the way for efficient management of materials.

There are several factors that contribute towards an effective strategy when it comes to construction storage. For instance, not all construction materials can be stored in the same way.

Also, hazardous materials need to be stored in a way that prevents accidents on site. Thefts are also a common nuisance that needs to be tackled effectively.

Hence, storage of construction materials should also be about safety and security. In fact, safe storage is a key element of construction site safety protocols.

This article looks at how one can ensure optimal storage at construction sites.

Effective Storage of Different Construction Materials

Depending on their durability, construction materials have different storage requirements.

    1] Bricks

Bricks are one of the easiest materials to store as they just need to be stacked. However, the height of each stack should not exceed 2.4 meters to ensure stability.

Also, bricks need to be kept away from water and moisture to prevent damage. Hence, they should be stacked on dry level ground and covered with polythene sheets.

A good idea is to install a shipping container cover roof over your storage area or warehouse to protect it from the effects of the elements.

    2] Tiles

Tiles are used for roofing, and they should be stacked vertically to a maximum height of 6 inches. The ones placed at the end of each row should be laid flat and staggered.

    3] Blocks

Blocks should also be covered with a polythene sheet to prevent damage. The maximum height is 8 courses for stability.

    4] Drainage Pipes

The ideal way to store drainage pipes is to stack them horizontally and reversing the ends in the alternative rows.

    5] Timber

The ideal way to effectively store timber is to place them horizontally and cover with a scaffold rack. There should be provision for ventilation, yet it should be protected from water.

    6] Cement

When it comes to cement, care should be taken to prevent it from coming in contact with moisture at all costs. Few bags can be stacked to a maximum height of 1 meter.

However, medium quantities call for a waterproof and fireproof shed for maximum safety. Large quantities of loose cement should only be stored in a cement storage silo.

    7] Paint

Paint can quickly dry up when exposed to air, and so it needs to be stored in a cool dry place. The ideal temperature recommended is 50 to 75 degrees.

Tips to Improve Construction Storage Solutions

Now, here are a few quick tips for a more efficient storage solution.

    Choose the Storage Area Wisely

The most significant decision you need to make is the choice of your storage area. Consider factors like its distance from the construction site, weather condition, security, accessibility, etc.

This choice can affect your costs in the long run, as construction is a long-term project.

    Keep Similar Materials Together

Many construction materials have similar requirements for storage. It’s a good idea to store them in one section of your storage area.

    Invest in Security Measures

Security is key when it comes to storage of construction materials. You cannot afford to lose stuff to thefts.

It is recommended that you invest in security cameras for surveillance and also locks and fences to keep thieves at bay.

Bring in an Inventory Management System

Construction materials have a shelf life beyond which they are rendered useless. So, an effective inventory management system is very significant.

Inventory management ensures your inventory moves out in the same order in which it has entered the warehouse. In the absence of effective storage solutions, construction materials run the risk of damage.

This leads to financial losses as one would need to invest again and again for the same materials. Also, a casual approach to storage can lead to accidents due to materials falling off and injuring people.

    Conclusion:

Effective construction storage is all about understanding the basics of each construction material. It’s essential for a smooth construction process and prevents unnecessary delays.
